Active Directory Service is a very important new feature in Windows 2000. It is a centralized location for storing, managing, and locating information and resources in an enterprise. It allows a single network logon and a single point of administration for the network users and managers. This means that the administrators can just create an account in one place, then the user will be able to access all the difference resources with the same account. It also serves as an organized naming service for looking up resource locations. Its services range from locating a printer thats on the same floor as the user, to locating a database server for an application thats on the other side of the planet. In this article, Tin Lam looks as Active Directory Service, and uses it to create an application that maintains a list of screen names for AOL's Instant Messenger application.
