1000 times slower! ADO.NET dataset .Rows.Add() is 1000x slower than (3 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
ADO.NET dataset.Rows.Add() is 1000x slower than writing to a file using BinaryWriter! This is true even if I am using an in memory dataset without any file I/O. Has anyone else experienced this? I need to add lots of records to SQL Server very quickly. The following statement adds a 1000x performance hit inside my loop: myDataSet.Tables[tableindex].Rows.Add(newRow); Any suggestions for performance...
ideas? - hacking together C# generics for perf. reasons (4 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
Hi all, I am writing a large image processing library and this means that I need many different types of image formats. Currently I am supporting Short/Single/Double/ComplexF/Complex data types but this requires duplicated effort on my part for performance reasons. I need to rewrite critical data manipulation functions for each data type since using I can not accepted the boxing/unboxing penalty i...
Speed Technique (3 replies)

Hello all, I am developing a C# application that involves two ListView controls. The first control won't always necessarily have a fixed amount of items in it. Each item in the control has its tag property set to a string. The program allows the user to select any number of items in the first ListView and add them to the second ListView (Tag and all). The functionality works fine. My problem is sp...
Finding references to an object (2 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
I'm tracking down memory problems in a complex C# application. By counting constructors and destructors we know that certain UI objects are being created and never going away during garbage collection. We've replaced the static events with arrays of WeakReference objects, and in some cases commented out event handlers on a test basis to make sure that isn't it. We still have some objects that won'...
object not garbage collected when using static events (2 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
There are a few events I fire in my system that are globally needed. The way I have handled this is to use a class with a static event. This means that any class can add one of it's methods as a listener. The problem is that the object never goes out of scope because there is always another class with a reference to it. It almost seems to me like the garbage collector should ignore this case, sinc...

Is there a way to make custom counter with a enum type other than NumberOfItems32 ? (2 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
I was able to create a custom counter but it seems as if the only type I can create is the 'NumberOfItems32' type. I would like to create a counter of type 'RateOfCountsPerSecond32' but can't determine how to do this programmatically. Ed
performance of CLR vs Unmanaged (8 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
I did a simple performance test of CLR vs. Unmanaged code. The test is a matrix multiplication of two 100x100 matrix. To my surprise, CLR is much slower than unmanaged code. Here are the result 1. VC 6.0 6 7ms 2. VB 6.0 20 30 ms 3. Managed C 50 ms 4. C# 80 100 ms How could C# is 10 times slower than C and, to my surprise, 4 times slower than VB? Am I doing anyting wrong? Your help will be apprecia...
Is there a way to make a thread in .NET run at IDLE priority? (8 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
Is there a way to make a thread in .NET run at IDLE priority? I have an application I ported from C to C# that runs in the background continuously (a simulation model) It works well enough but one difference is in the priority it runs. In my C program I issued the following call to make my thread (separate from the main windows thread) run at idle. SetThreadPriority(GetCurrentThread(),THREAD PRIOR...
Same app, same hardware, but abysmal performance under Windows 98 (3 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
We have an client app which calls a web service. The web service returns a DataSet object containing 20 rows of 200 bytes each. When we run the client on a Win2K machine, the operation takes 2 10 seconds. The same operation on a Win 98 box takes 5 6 MINUTES. The client app is identical and both clients are targeting the same web service (on the same IIS box). The Win 98 and Win 2K boxes have ident...
Is VC7 unmanaged code really 50 times slower than VC6? (8 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
I have been using VC7 (full release version) since it was released, give or take a day or two. My immediate reaction was that the CLR concept is a brilliant idea, but my code (unmanaged C ) felt a bit slow. Amongst other things, I'm involved in a project that is implementing a wide variety of parsers for various proprietary and not so proprietary file formats, which has resulted in a number of rec...
poor GDI+ performance (2 replies)
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.performance
I am doing some bitblits using GDI from VB.Net and am surprised at the terrible performance that I am getting. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I could be doing wrong. I am using the DrawImage function to bitblit 100 (26 x 62) little bitmaps to a picture box using the ImageAttribute class to define color substitution for transparency and two other colors (a total of 3 color re...
