I use design patterns all the time. I use it for ideas for how to solve
my problems. I use them as referral points during design discussions. I
use them to simplify my documentation. And I use them to easily
understand other programs.=20
I am not deciding up front to use a pattern. I look at requirements,
then most often I invent a solution architecture. When I review the
solution I ask myself why I did not use this or that design pattern.
Very often I find that I change the architecture and end up with an
overall clearer architecture. Of course sometimes I end up using too
many patters where there is no need of them. Then I have to change
things pack. Anyway the option to think in patterns make the architect
job somewhat easier.

I think most good developers use patterns, but have not put names to them or
had a consistent way of conveying the patterns they use to others. I use
patterns as a matter of daily business. Some of these I have learned from
patterns books, others have evolved from my experience and some have been
inherited from projects I have joined. I use them most when designing new
systems, a little less while refactoring existing systems.
