Hello everyone.

I'm learning asp.net and just tried to use the system.web.mail namespace
and received an error about security. I'm working through Wrox's
Beginning ASP.net using vb.net. In the book errata, they did address
the security issue and had instructions for setting "write" permissions
for the folder containing the code, but "write" was already selected.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Glenn

I don't have the code on this computer. I wrote a very basic snippet of
code that used "mailmessage". I set the to, from, subject, and body
properties.

Then I created a new smtpmail object, using my newly created mailmessage
as a parameter.

The error said something like the send using property wasn't set
correctly.

I wish I had the code here, but I'll try and rewrite it so I can email
it to you.

Do you know what the problem could be?

Glenn

There maybe a problem with the smtp server you are using.

RE: [ngfx-mail] Email
That doesn't sound like security at all; it sounds like you just need to
explicitly set the SMTP server that you're going to use
(SmtpMail.SmtpServer). This is a change from the Beta 2; even if it's just
localhost, you have to set that property.

Well , you telling us very little so we would be taking educated guesses
here is two that I can think of ...

1.    The user account which the application is running under on the web
server might not have permissions on the SMTP server you are trying to relay
mail off.
2.    You might have not set a proper smtp server and/or might not have
executed the send mail property correctly.

Here is some code that will fix the above.

Specifying the CORRECT smtp server you would put this just after you declare
the mail object

e.g.

Imports System.Web.Mail (0r if you using c++) using system.web.mail;

Then (this will be in VB.net)

Dim mail as New MailMessage() ' declaring the new mail object

'Then you would put this to specify the correct smtp server

SmtpMail.SmtpServer = "MySMTP.SMTP.com"

'That would make sure it would direct it to the correct smtp mail server and
not the default(which is the web servers smtp if you running IIS 5 and
above) smtp server.

'Then at the end of the code where you would have

mail.to "Click here to reveal e-mail address"

mail.from "Click here to reveal e-mail address

mail.body "Hello World"

'here is the important part to execute the mail object to the smtp server

SmtpMail.Send(mail) ' REMEMBER that mail is what I declared to be the New
MailMessage(Dim mail as New MailMessage) you would use what ever you
declared as the mail object.

HTH

Let me know
