Caching in a class

For some reason, this code returns an "Object reference not set to an
instance of an object." error in the second line (in the example). This is
in a class that doesn't import the Page or Usercontrol classes, so I have to
define the cache class separately. It's in a readonly property of the
class.

Private myCache As Caching.Cache
If myCache("myThing") Is Nothing Then
myCache("myThing") = MyItem
End If

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh
