What do we need to do in order to make HTTP requests over SSL? I can
easily do normal HTTP, but I get the following error when i use HTTPS:

System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not
establish trust relationship with remote server.

Thanks.

Yes. I grabbed a test certificate from thawte, installed it and tested
with that.

It may actually be that, that is the issue. WSDL.exe fails with the same
error, and in VS.NET i tried the same url and get the error:

Certificate Problem when accessing the url https://......
Problem code: 0x800B0109
Certificate Problem: CertUNTRUSTEDROOT

So now im trying to find a Web Service that i can test this SSL stuff against.

All the examples I see online say that there should be no difference in how
you do it (compared to HTTP).

Thanks.

What is the client and what is the "server". I assume that you have a
windows application or web application trying to connect to an IIS hosted
server?

Generally, you need valid SSL certificates on both machines, and it helps if
its from a trusted certificate authority (like Verisign). Also, you need to
know what ports to communicate on. By default, this is 443 under IIS.

I finally figured it all out. It was in fact the test certificate on my
box that was causing the issue. In the end there was no change in code
from handing a normal HTTP request vs a HTTPS request...just needed to be
testing against a more reliable server. :)

thanks.

Robert,

SSL Test certificates aren't recognized automatically by the tools in
VS.net, or at least they don't seem to behave that way. I had to setup a
box with certification services and issue myself a certificate to do
development on a project using a SSL web service.

Good Luck,

Mark
