Pre ASP.Net it was traditional to mark required fields with a red
asterisk (*) when a form is first displayed, whereas now with ASP.net
it seems to be the fashion to identify required fields after the form
has been submitted.

Ideally I would like to be able to identify required fields with a red
asterisks when the form is displayed and then if the validation fails
to display a message beside the field as well as the summary at the top
of the page.

Has anyone worked out how to do this with ease?

Cheers,

Julian Voelcker

This is not a problem...put your validator near your field and put the
asterisk wherever you want.

Ex:
<asp:requiredfieldvalidator id=3D"rq" runat=3D"server" =
displaymode=3D"none"
errormessage=3D"First name is required" =
controltovalidate=3D"txtFName">This
is required</asp:requiredfieldvalidator>

This would display the error message in your summary as well as the text
within the validator will show wherever the validator tags sit.
