I hope someone can help me here.

My install of IBS (PortalVB_VS_0204.exe) fails with the message:

The IBuySpy samples are written in ASP.Net and require the.NET Framework,
SQL Server or MDSE, and IIS . Please install the missing components before
installing this sample.

I don't believe anything is missing, however. I am running:

WinXP Pro
IIS 5.1 which came with WinXP Pro
VS.NET Pro
MSDE which came with VS.NET Pro

I created an administrator user named ASPNET, per the advice in other posts
in this newsgroup.
I have installed the MS Mobile Internet Toolkit.

My logs shows only the following

12:46:03 PM Saturday, August 03, 2002: [Checking system requirements]
12:46:04 PM Saturday, August 03, 2002: [Pass] Detected a local instance of
SQL Server.

And that's it - it stops right there.

Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

looks like you are missing SQL Server... it does not install with VS.NET...
you need to install it separately. Enterprise version has a CD with SQL
Server as one of the disks... not sure about Pro version.

I have MSDE... it is essentially SQL Server minus Enterprise Manager. Even
so, I still have the functionality of Enterprise Manager through VS.NET's
Server Explorer.

Can anyone else help? I can't believe the installer is so poor that it can't
identify the components I have. There must be some way I can get this to
work.

Anyone?

Barry,

Sometimes, the order in which you installed the necessary components can
throw things off. When this happens, I find it easier to just manually
install the portal. Have you tried following the steps at
(http://www.asp.net/ibuyspy/InstallationNotes.aspx)?

Alex,

I did not try the steps explicitly, but I suppose in trying to install the
VB/VS sample was attempting step #1, which failed with the error message I
described earlier.

Since that didn't work, I don't understand what else I can do, or am
supposed to do.

(BTW, I also posted my original note in the WestMichigan .NET Group board)

That helped me to install the files. Thanks!

Now I have a different problem. It won't run. IIS died with an "unexpected
error 0x8ffe2740 occurred" message.
I think it may be because of the blasted FrontPage extensions. I don't
understand why we have to use those.

I have another question, too: While I have a virtual web set up pointing to
C:\PortalVBVS\PortalVBVS, aren't I supposed to have the actual web files
underneath inetpub? Won't IIS (when I fix it) always ask me to download my
files insead of opening them up in the browser?
