Is it possible to use User Controls across domains?

We have a number of sites originating from the same default domain
name, e.g.

Site1.domain.com
site2.domain.com

We are using User Controls for some of the page structure that it
common to all sites and are at the moment maintained separately.

Is there any easy way of changing things so that they can be maintained
centrally, or will I have to re-ccreate them as servercontrols?

Cheers,

Unfortunately, you can't maintain them centrally. If you want to use
them in another website/domain, you have to explicitly copy them to each
one. Another option as you suggested is to create server controls,
though if you update a server control that is not in the GAC, you still
have to copy the updated assembly to each bin directory that uses it.

John,

Thanks for the link, interesting reading.

I hadn't thought about the webservices approach, but have already made
a start along the virtual directory approach (which I am also using for
sharing style sheets and images), but had hit problems because I hadn't
referenced the dll.

As we say in the English countryside, there are many ways to skin a
cat, it's just a question of finding the right one!

Thanks Alex,

Fortunately I develop all the sites with VS.Net as a single solution so
updating the server controls occurs automatically.
