I was wondering if Microsoft will have any classes available to connect to
MySQL databases instead of just SQL. I know being Microsoft, they wouldn't
want to do that, but a lot of the servers out there use MySql because it's
more affordable than regular SQL server.

Any comments or answers reguarding this? Also if so, when?

Thanks a bunch.

You can obtain a managed provider for MySQL (and other DBMS engines,
including an alternative ODBC.NET provider) from OpenLink Software
at: http://www.openlinksw.com/download" target="_blank">http://www.openlinksw.com/download follow the download process
which then provides ADO.NET Providers from the product download
matrix.

I've not heard of any plans for Microsoft to develop a native .NET provider for MySQL at this point.
The only other native .NET provider Microsoft has developed is for Oracle which is still probably
the most widely used DBMS.

..NET providers for other DBMSs will likely be left to third-party vendors or the DBMS vendors
themselves:

MySQL AB aquired the ByteFX.Data provider from ByteFX, Inc. and is
developing the product into its official MySQL ADO.NET connector.
Reggie Burnett, the ByteFX.Data author, is working with MySQL to
release a 1.0 version before the end of the year. See the notice at:
http://www.bytefx.com/DotData.aspx

The new project will eventually be hosted by MySQL instead of
SourceForge, and the namespace will change. Helping out with testing
and bugfixing now will help get the 1.0 out sooner, so pitch in if you
can!

MySQL hasn't started announcing the upcoming offer yet, so information
is best obtained from the ByteFX mailing list.

If anyone can translate this post into German, French, or Italian, I'm
sure it would be appreciated!

Thanks much!
