Thanks for all the insightful responses,

My faith in the garbage collector has been restored.

I have rewritten my sample application so that it doesn't have a
reference to a reference, but instead creates the objects directly
(generation 0 now?)

....
Dim lotsOfData() As Byte
lotsOfData = Array.CreateInstance(GetType(Byte), 1048576) '10 Mb
'Now do nothing, let the garbage collector pick up the fact that
there are no references
'to these objects
End Sub

I expect lotsOfData will be Nothing anyway, since it only has scope
local to this function

And the code for my second button
....
Dim lotsOfData() As Byte
lotsOfData = Array.CreateInstance(GetType(Byte), 1048576) '10 Mb
'Now set these objects to null to see if it makes any difference
to the garbage collector.
lotsOfData = Nothing
End Sub

Also this time I compiled it under release mode :) and there was
absolutely no differences in memory usage between the two, as expected.

On this note I found an interesting article on the garbage collector at

Ivan,
In addition to the others comments.

Every thing you wanted to know about the .NET GC, but were afraid to ask:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/1200/GCI2/

Hope this helps
Jay
