Newbie question: I just installed .NET on my computer and its as if nothing
was put on there. I would have expected to see some 'Visual' tools or
something. My wuestion is what did I install? What is the difference betwen
..NET and Visual C# or Visual Basic etc.?

What you installed is most likely the .NET framework. This is much like the
VB 6 runtime files; To run any VB6 application, you need the VB6 runtime
files. In the earlier days, the VB6 runtime files did not ship with the
operating system which is why you would see some applications install the
VB6 runtimes before installing the actual application (well, atleast I saw
quite a few did that).
Its the same with .NET applications - any application developed in .NET (any
language - VB, VC#, VC++, etc) will require the .NET framework to run since
it contains the runtimes. The Visual tools that you need come with the
Visual Studio .NET (currently version 2003 is in production. version 2005 is
in Beta 1). However, you do not 'absolutely' need the visual tools. You
could simply download the .NET framework SDK and write programs in notepad
or any other text editor and compile them with the complier that comes with
the SDK (eg. vbc.exe will complie VB .NET applications). VB, VC#, VC++, etc
are the languages that you can use to develop applications that will run on
the .NET framework.

here's where you can get the .NET framework SDK:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/downloads/updates/default.aspx

if you are just begining .NET development, you might want to download
framework version 2.0 beta since that will subsequently be the version most
people will use when VS 2005 is release sometime next year (hopefully).
Otherwise, you can download the current version 1.1 of the framework SDK.

If you are indeed going for version 2.0, you can also download the express
versions of VB, VC#, etc as well as SQL Server from here:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/

you could also order the CD for the entire Visual Studio .NET 2005 from here
(only shipping charge is applied - otherwise its free):
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/get/default.aspx#vs2005

hope this helps and makes the distinction clear..
Imran.
