3rd Party applications are applications written by another company.
For example, lets say I work for the IT department of a health-care
company. The IT department builds software to support health-care
related business for this company. Now, since it is our job to write
health-care related software, we don't want to write custom controls
that offer much richer functionality, than say the DataGrid control
..NET WinForms, but we definately think its useful to our customers to
have this functionality. So, we find another company that specializes
in writing custom controls and use their solution within our solution.
So, using a 3rd Party Application basically means using someone else's
solution in your solution.

The term "third-party" has been around since computers were room-filled
collections of boxes. In that world, a big, important company or government
agency would shell out millions of dollars to buy a computer. The computer
company would bundle in "free" operating software and language compilers as a
marketing enticement. Should some other company seek to edge in on the
computer company's software business, the interloper was termed a third
party. The first party was the hardware vendor, the second party was the
customer, and the third party was the interloper. The first party would seek
to instill fear, uncertainty and doubt in the second party about the third
party. Nowadays, the first party is Microsoft, the second party is any buyer
of Microsoft products, and the third party is anybody selling software who is
not Microsoft.
