I notice that every now and then the Close method of
System.Data.OracleClient.OracleConnection causes:

An unhandled exception of type 'System.Exception' occurred in
system.data.oracleclient.dll
Additional information: Internal Pooler Error: 2

I searched and couldn't find any hits on this. What's a good way to start
figuring out what's going on? Thanks...

Assembly System.Data.OracleClient, Version 1.0.5000.0

It could be an Oracle client error.
What version do you have?

The best I can determine (how do you tell?) is that the Oracle client is
8.0.6...

Oops - I was wrong: it's 8.1.7

I opened System.Data.OracleClient.dll in notepad, and there is the error
message:
"Internal Pooler Error: {0}", so it looks like it's a .NET Framework error
message. Now if I just knew what it meant :-(

Isn't there a list somewhere of all error messages and what they mean?

It might still be an Oracle's error. Anyway, if you can, try updating Oracle
client to a newer version, like 9ir2 or something.

Thanks, Miha.. I think I fixed the problem, though -- we had a data layer
class that was calling Close on the connection, in the destructor (this is
c#) of the class. Now according to the doc for OracleConnection.Close Method:

"CAUTION Do not call Close or Dispose on a Connection, a DataReader, or
any other managed object in the Finalize method of your class. In a
finalizer, you should only release unmanaged resources that your class owns
directly."

This used to work until we upgraded to .Net Framework 1.1 from 1.0. Maybe a
hole got closed or something?

The documentation is correct. Don't do anything in finalizer or better,
don't even implement one if you don't use *unmanaged* resources as the
document clearly states - and this is valid for *entire* .net thing.
If you do have to implement finalizer - take *extreme* care and be sure you
do know what are you doing.
Anyway, I am glad that you found the cause of the problem.
