I created a folder called Configuration and added several files to this
folder in a windows set up project. After install, I can see
Configuration/myfile.xml, but when I tried to change the file extension to
myfile.txt or remove myfile.xml, then tried to launch the application, I
always get an info that ask me to install/reinstall the application. Is there
any solution to this problem?

Lilly,
What is happening here is Visual Studio creates advertised shortcuts so on
launch the program verifies that all of its files exist.
To change this behavior a nd cause it not to repair the file, select the
files in the setup project and change Condition = NOT REINSTALL so that
the file will not get reinstalled on a repair and its Transitive = TRUE so
that the condition is re-evaluated. This will cause the installer to flash
on the screen the first time after the file is deleted, while it verifies
that the file should not be reinstalled, but you will not see the installer
after that.

Make sure that registry entry is not selected as the key path of your
component.
Or sue the trick mentioned in another post: give the component a condition
of Not REINSTALL, and also mark it as Transitive.
