When I attaempt to run the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 nothing happens after I
accept the EULA. The system doesn't hang, its just that the installation
doesn't proceed at all - at least after 90 minutes. Sorry, there's no error
messages, no other indictaion that there's a problem, just no progrees in the
installation. Anyone else experienced this problem?

Well I managed to fix the problem, but its not an elegant solution. I
restored my system to its WinXP Pro pre-SP2 state via a Norton Ghost backup.
I then unistalled the NET Framework v1.1 without any problems. After
re-installing WinXP SP2, I noticed that both the World Wide Web Publishing
Service (W3SVC) and the SMTP services had hung on startup (the serices are
listed as "starting"). I reset both of these to Manual startup and following
a reboot followed the MS Knowledge Base Article - 273639 on debugging IIS
Admin services. On restarting the W3SVC via the debugger, Norton Firewall
registered an access attempt and I set appropriate permissions. After this I
was able to install NET Framework, the SDK and the SP1 pack for v1.1
successfully.

I don't understand what the problem is with the W3SVC and SMTP after
installing the XP SP2 update, as I disabled the XP Firewall immediately. But
for some reason SP2 causes both of these services to hang on startup and
require a new set of access permissions for the Norton Firewall in order to
work correctly.

I guess the noral is, make sure you back up your syetm before upgrading to
SP2!

I am having a problem also, but unfortunately I have yet to resolve the
issue. I execute the install, it asks me if I want to install, I say yes,
then I have to accept the EULA, which I do, then it starts the install. I
get a "please wait while windows configures the MS .net framework 1.1". A
new bar graph comes up, and quickly reaches 100%, then it clears again, then
says Time remaining 59 seconds..and the bar graph only moves 2 bars. I've
let it hang all day. If I cancel, it resonds that it is cancelling, but only
a end process in the task manager will do anything. If I cancel before I get
to those 2 bars, it will cancel, but once I hit those 2 bars nothing!

Yes, this is exactly the same problem I am having. I have tried the install a
couple of additional times now with exactly the same results - so I am
considering uninstalling the .net framework and reisinstalling from scratch
then trying to install SP1.

Hi Darryl,
I am sorry that you are having a problem installing .NET Framework 1.1 SP1.
If the machine hardware is very old or if the machine itself is heavily
loaded then perhaps the installation could take tens of minutes; but I
doubt it should ever take 90 minutes, if the patch is working properly.

If you are running other applications while installing the service pack,
please remember to close them. The other applications might be causing the
service pack to run slowly.

If this does not solve the problem, could you provide a little extra
information about the install session please? For instance, after
accepting the EULA, do you see any activity on the status bar? Does the
status bar text say "Gathering information..." or "Time remaining: 2
minutes 45 seconds"? Also, does the progress bar ever move, or does the
progress bar remain completely empty for the whole time?

Also, it would be very helpful if you could provide the windows installer
log file. To do this, please use regedit.exe to add the "Logging" and
"Debug" registry keys and values under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"Logging"="voicewarmup"
"Debug"=dword:00000003

After adding these registry keys, re-run the 1.1 SP1 patch. Accept the
EULA and wait several minutes so that the patch is again in the same
scenario. At this point, please make a copy of the %temp%\MSI*.LOG file.
If you post the contents of the Windows Installer log file (the
%temp%\MSI*.LOG file), we can hopefully see what the installer is spending
all of its time on.

Thanks,
Josh Free

Need help with a setup issue? Please enable setup logging and
include the %temp%\MSI*.LOG file with your newsgroup posting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Set these registry keys to enable Windows Installer (MSI) logging:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"Logging"="voicewarmup"
"Debug"=dword:00000003

Set these registry keys to disable Windows Installer (MSI) logging:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"Logging"=""
"Debug"=dword:00000000

After enabling logging and re-runing setup, a log file will be
created at %temp%\MSI*.LOG. Please include this log file with your
newsgroup post so that we can better assist you.
