has anybody figured out how to get this working, so the server returns a
GZIP-ed HTTP stream?

has anybody gotten GZIP compression working with an ASP.NET app?I have not, but it seems to me that server cpu is more often the bottleneck than bandwidth these days, unless you're streaming a lot of graphics, right?
